AUG 26 1846 Mendelssohn’s Elias (Elijah) was first performed at the Birmingham (England) Town Hall before an audience of 2,000.  No less than four choruses and four arias were encored, and the applause evidently bordered on the hysterical. Mendelssohn himself conducted.
